The Role
Cambium is seeking a Computational/AI Materials Scientist to drive material discovery through physical simulation and AI modeling. A candidate should have deep expertise in physical modeling (quantum or atomistic) and applying AI to materials problems, and a passion for material discovery and innovation.
The successful candidate will lead the development and application of molecular dynamics (MD), density functional theory (DFT), and (AI/ML) models for material property prediction and inverse design of ground-breaking materials in composite and optical systems. Candidates will integrate closely with experimental colleagues to feed material screening and product development activities.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute molecular and quantum simulations to support materials discovery and optimization.
- Develop and apply multi-modal AI models to predict and design novel material candidates for experimental testing.
- Work with collaborators to collect, aggregate, and quality-control data for modeling and analysis.
- Automate high-throughput simulation and data curation pipelines.
- Implement and scale simulation and AI/ML workflows on cloud-based HPC systems (e.g., Azure, GCP).
- Contribute to IP generation, technical presentations, and reports, and collaborative R&D efforts with partners in academia, national labs, and industry.
Qualifications
- PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or Biophysics
- Strong grounding in fundamental physical theory and the tools of simulation and AI for materials discovery
- 2+ years of experience in molecular dynamics (MD) and/or DFT modeling (e.g., VASP, Quantum ESPRESSO, GPAW), AI-driven materials design and discovery
- 1+ years of experience developing and modifying neural networks to address materials or chemical property prediction or molecular design
- Background in polymers and amorphous materials preferred
- Experience in cloud computing and parallel computing tools (e.g., SLURM on Azure or GCP).
- Exceptional communication skills, self-starter, and a collaborative mindset.
- Passion for materials science and technology in general. Delights in venturing bravely into the unknown.
