THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced Export Compliance Manager to lead the export control program for our manufacturing, product development, and government contract work. We are an innovative advanced materials startup passionately focused on products. You’ll lead export control compliance for our company where you’ll classify and manage regulatory requirements for products we have invented. You’ll do the same for what we invent tomorrow. Additionally, you will own document control and change management for our product development work in El Segundo. Come join an outstanding team and grow with us!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Develop and execute the comprehensive export & import compliance strategy to support advanced materials manufacturing and product development (hardware, software, technical data) under International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR), OFAC sanctions, U.S. Customs, etc.

· Serve as a subject-matter expert for classification (USML/ECCN), jurisdiction determinations, technology control plans (TCPs), export control quality control plans, export license/TCN filings, exemption/exception usage.

· Lead the review of contracts/statements of work, perform risk assessments, engage with engineering, programs, supply-chain, legal, business development to identify export-control issues proactively.

· Establish and enforce internal control plans, record-keeping, audit trails, and key metrics to monitor compliance effectiveness.

· Manage audits/investigations: when potential non-compliance or violations arise, coordinate disclosures to agencies, remediate, and implement corrective actions.

· Provide training, guidance, and awareness programs for technical, operational, and business-stakeholder audiences (engineering, logistics, foreign travel/visits, supplier management).

· Lead export/trade compliance; mentor staff, define process improvements, implement automation tools, and drive continuous process optimization.

· Develop and maintain a document control program and lead change management for company processes.

· Stay up to date on changes in U.S. export/import regulations and global trade regimes; assess impact on company and implement necessary changes to policies and processes.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

· Be an outstanding teammate

· Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (or equivalent experience); advanced degree preferred.

· Minimum ~5-8 years of export/trade compliance experience in aerospace, defense, or government-contracting and manufacturing environment.

· Deep knowledge of ITAR/EAR, U.S. export/import rules, sanctions, restricted-party screening, technology control plans.

· Proven experience preparing and managing U.S. export licenses, exemptions, and exceptions; classification and jurisdiction decisions for controlled hardware, software, technical data.

· Strong cross-functional collaboration: ability to engage engineering, programs, contracts, supply chain, legal, and business development teams.

· Excellent communication (written & verbal), training delivery, ability to influence.

· Experience with auditing/compliance monitoring and leading investigations and corrective action programs.

· U.S. Citizenship (and ability to maintain any required security clearance)

· Experience in aerospace/government product environment; previous team-lead or supervisory role; familiarity with export compliance tools and systems.

SALARY/HOURLY

$100,000-$160,000 annually
