AI Engineer — Foundation Models
(Full-time, onsite in El Segundo, CA — U.S. citizenship required due to the nature of our work)
About Cambium
Cambium is an advanced materials startup building next generation polymer and composite systems for aerospace, defense, and critical industries. We combine physics-based modeling, experimentation, and cutting-edge AI—including multimodal foundation models—to accelerate materials discovery and deployment.
Role Summary
We are hiring an AI Engineer who thrives in fast iteration loops and wants to build training pipelines, run experiments, optimize models, and ship AI that directly impacts R&D and operations. You will work shoulder to shoulder with the AI and materials science teams to implement experiments, improve performance, manage datasets, and wrap models for deployment. This is a hands-on, full stack AI engineering role with tremendous room for technical and career growth.
Key Responsibilities
· Execute training runs, ablations, evaluations, and model experiments under the guidance of the AI Architect.
· Own model codebases: data loaders, training loops, evaluation harnesses, inference tooling.
· Optimize model performance (compute, memory, distributed training).
· Partner with the Data Platform Engineer on dataset creation, feature/data contracts, and labeling.
· Package models for production and collaborate with Deployment Engineer and users/operations teams to iteratively improve
Qualifications
· 5+ years in model training, experimentation, and AI/ML tooling
· Exceptional programming and ML engineering fundamentals (Python, PyTorch, training pipelines).
· Experience in full stack deployments.
· Interest in scientific and physical modeling applications is a plus.
BENEFITS
Cambium offers a highly competitive compensation and benefits plan. This includes excellent medical/dental/vision benefits, and a matching 401(k) plan, professional development reimbursement, and an opportunity for equity for most full time positions.
As a condition of employment, the candidate may need to successfully complete a medical evaluation and obtain clearance to wear respiratory personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134
