About Mytra:

We’re creating an entirely new way to solve the most ubiquitous problem in industry - moving and storing material. We’re applying robotics and distributed software to create a new class of product for this $1T market. We’re focused on the supply chain industry first. The industry is in a massive bind with the continued growth of e-commerce, sharp rise in costs, and supply chain disruptions. What has been a “sleepy” industry for decades is now at the epicenter of sustaining the global economy.

About the role

As a Senior Vision Systems Engineer at Mytra, you'll join our Vision AI team as we scale our robotic perception and sensing capabilities. We need a hands-on imaging systems specialist to design, build, and optimize the full imaging chain — from camera selection and lens specification through illumination design, polarization, and end-to-end imaging simulation — to deliver the highest-fidelity data to our perception pipeline.

You'll work closely with a team of Computer Vision and AI engineers, acting as the critical bridge between physical imaging hardware and the neural networks and algorithms that consume the data. Image quality bounds everything downstream — detection, segmentation, and planning — so this role has outsized impact on our entire robotics stack. This is a hands-on role where you will design and execute experiments that validate imaging approaches, inform the design of optical simulations, and develop custom image signal processing algorithms — all in service of maximizing the quality of data flowing into our AI models.

Responsibilities:

  • Design imaging and sensing systems for deployment in warehouse and factory environments — supporting payload inspection, robot perception, safety, and other operational needs
  • Develop and maintain end-to-end imaging simulations of our sensor, lens, and lighting systems — including calibration, characterization, and MTF measurement — to enable rapid virtual prototyping and design iteration
  • Evaluate emerging sensing technologies and design benchmarks to fast-track their assessment — spanning industrial cameras, ToF, FMCW LiDAR, event cameras, and multispectral imaging
  • Design custom image signal processing (ISP) algorithms — auto white balance, auto exposure, tone mapping, and other pipeline stages tailored to our perception needs
  • Bridge image quality improvements to perception outcomes — contributing to algorithm development, multi-modal sensor fusion, and evaluation to drive measurable gains in detection, segmentation, and 3D reconstruction

Ideal Candidates

  • You're very comfortable with imaging physics and optical systems design, and have experience with industrial camera integration, illumination design, and image signal processing
  • You are excited about working on an immature project, growing together, and shaping the future of the company
  • Uncertainty isn't scary, and you're willing to realize mistakes and pivot
  • You can convey complex ideas and technical concepts to a diverse audience
  • Openness, inquisitiveness, and constant ambition are important values
  • 5+ years of industry experience in machine vision, imaging systems, or a related field
  • Deep practical knowledge of imaging physics — how light interacts with materials, sensor response curves, polarization effects, spectral filtering, and illumination geometry
  • Hands-on experience developing industrial cameras or systems (area scan and/or line scan), lenses, lighting (LEDs, strobes, structured light), and optical filters
  • Strong experimental methodology — you design controlled experiments, measure results quantitatively, and iterate systematically rather than relying on guesswork
  • Strong software skills with proficiency in Python — for building imaging pipelines, data collection and analysis tools, and integrating with camera SDKs and hardware interfaces
  • Demonstrated ability to work across disciplinary boundaries — you collaborate with software, mechanical, and controls engineers to debug real-world robotic systems, and can determine when a perception failure originates in the imaging chain

Nice to have:

  • Experience with diverse sensing modalities and challenging imaging conditions — high-dynamic-range environments, non-Lambertian surfaces, multi-modal sensing (RGB, depth, multispectral)
  • Understanding of how image quality maps to perception performance — familiarity with metrics like contrast, SNR, and MTF, and exposure to downstream pipelines such as object detection, depth estimation, 3D reconstruction, or SLAM
  • Familiarity with optical simulation tools (Zemax, FRED, or similar) for system design and virtual prototyping
  • Background in optics, photonics, physics, or electrical engineering (BS or MS)

A Final Note:

If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply — even if you don’t check every box. At Mytra, we build bots, but we hire humans. We value thoughtful challengers who communicate with clarity and respect, and we’re lifelong learners committed to getting better every day. We move fast, learn faster, and show up for each other under pressure. The best outcomes come from diverse perspectives working together to build something meaningful and built to last
